Q Sprint April 11 Newsletter

q sprint email logo.jpg

Hi Everyone and welcome to the April E-Newsletter for the 2010/2011 season.

Another busy month for many.  A few of us managed to get to the Rocky Quarter Horse Sale.  It was really great to be able to meet in person and put faces to names.  Especially as we are all spread out round this great state.  The number of horses offered  at the sale was down on previous years.  But considering the earlier weather events this would have been expected.  Prices being offered for the horses was also disappointing, especially from a vendors perspective.

For those that are not aware, http://www.speedhorse.com/ is offering its e-magazine for free for a limited time.  Jodie Vanstone (previous Q Sprint president) is a contributor to this fantastic magazine, in the section Around the Globe – Quarter Horse Racing Down Under.  In the 22 April edition she has a story on Jet Deck and his influence on the sprint horse industry in Australia.

Allan Sullivan of Sullivans Run has been busy with his research also.  On his web site http://sullivansrun.com.au/ he has a great article on Big Heart and the horses that carry the big heart genetics.

Over the Easter Weekend Boulia ran its annual campdraft and races.  This year they added a $2000, 200m Dash For Cash sprint race.  I will have more details and results from this great day in the May newsletter.

At the bottom of the newsletter there is a list of links that readers may be interested in.  Most readers will probably already have these on their favourites list.  If you have a stud and a website why not share it here with the rest of the sprint horse community, we really need to support each other.

If you have been toying with the idea of building a web site and are not really sure on how to go about things there are a couple of different options that you might like to give a try.  There are a number of different web site design companies that specialise in the horse industry and are reasonably priced.  Also there are free website, do it yourself options like http://www.webs.com/.  You use their web site templates and add your own information.  This is a relatively simple process that any computer novice can use.  The hardest part is choosing a template that suits your requirements, and you are able to change, add, delete things at any time.  Another option is a Blog.  These are also a free option with many hosts to choose form.  http://www.blogger.com/  is one that is easy to use.  A blog is different to a web site in that you can use it like a running commentary or diary of your stud’s/horse/life happenings and achievements.  Why not give it a go.  And when you have your site published email your link so we can share it with the rest of the community. J

Message From The President

It was really great to meet up with some of the members at the Rocky Q.H.sale and discuss a few things. It was good to meet our hard working newsletter editor Jody Murray, and catch up with  Brenton Miller newly settled in Central Qld and reacquaint with Esmay Wood's and Frank Caruana and Cathy and Danny Messenger also Sandy Eastcot  and Danny Murphy were  in attendance . We did not conduct an official meeting, as this gathering came together at the last minute, but we did discuss several matters that concerned some of the members in attendance.
After the fruitful meeting with ARQ and Qld Racing, the next move I believe is to approach the minister for racing and apply for funding to enable sprint racing to get underway, and I am sure that ARQ will be following this avenue in the very near future.
I am following up on several areas of private finance, as the wheels of government move very slowly and for all parties involved in sprint racing I feel we have to try and hurry things along.   Let's hope I have something encouraging to report in the next newsletter.

Merrie Elliot from South Australia is standing
champ 070.JPG
This chestnut horse is Tamale
He is a straight bred running horse.
He is by Ole Sugar Daddy.  Ole Sugar Daddy was by Warning Flag AA (The Ole Man AAAT x Femme Fatale AAA) and out of a Thoroughbred mare Junior Queen who was by Star Kingdom.
Tamale is out of Speed Queen (Jet Master x Campus Blair AA imp).
He has excessive speed (not proven in any official capacity of course), an extraordinary disposition and plenty of commonsense.
Tamale is a 3/4 brother to Little Joe Cool who carried Jane Willoughby to her APRA Junior Barrel Racing title several years ago.  He is also a half brother to Ruth Bergs great Barrel horse Dillon who amassed over 300 AQHA Barrel Racing points quite a number of years ago.

We also have Winning Deck.  He is by Deck the Halls and out of Bolette and his breeding would be familiar to most Queenslanders.
Winning Deck carries most of the influential blood that has gone into creating the modern Quarter running horse in the USA.  He is fast, hones in on a cow, has a great disposition, plenty of commonsense and is built to hold a lot of weight on a rope.
He is the first outside stallion that we brought into this herd since 1978 and we could not have got a better one had we scoured the country.

The third stallion is a beaut old thoroughbred, Mr Fitzjester.  He is a son of Rorys Jester and out of the metropolitan winning Mrs Fitzherbert.
He was bought off the track as a 3 year old on behalf of clients in the Kimberley.  They did not take him due to him being 15 hands.  We kept him because by then had discovered that he could really handle himself and had a natural stop and an ability to concentrate on a cow.
He is also no trouble to have around - minds his own business and says nothing.  He has not been used heavily but has produced Miss Goodspeed - winner of the last Australian Derby.  Also got Running Cat (runner up in the previous years Derby) and has an A grade polo horse and several all round great using horses.  He has recently returned home after several years in the Broken Hill area.

Merrie Elliott has for sale 6 Running bred yearling colts

Chestnut colt by Tamale from Barrique TB (she is by Snippetts from a Without Fear mare and from a Wilkes mare.  Something seriously wrong with our breeding program if this colt is not a fast one!

Palomino colt by Tamale and from Freckles Easy Warning (she carries the blood of Jet Master, Giant Pass, Jet on Sam and Warning Flag).  This is a big, ground covering colt.  As a foal he had a head that Barry reckoned "only a cowboy could love' but it now fits him a whole lot better.  A cowboy would still love him for his speed, strength and commonsense.

Bay colt by Tamale and from Cat Dancin Woman (this mare, by Go Far Bar Bob AAAT is the last daughter of Femme Fatale.  She would have to be one of the top time event producers in this country).  We probably should retain this quality colt because within his cacky bay hide he contains the blood of the most influential horses that have gone into the creation of this unique herd for more than 40 years - Go Far Bar Bob, Jet Master, Warning Flag, Ole Sugar Daddy and the mighty mares Femme Fatale and Campus Blair.  He might not be on the market but we will include him here.

Chestnut colt by Tamale and from a Mr Fitzjester mare.   Big, fast and looks like a heading horse already.  I don't think the AQHA will register this fellow because his mother never met some deadline.

Black colt (sort of black) by Boolarra Bullrush (we borrowed this running bred grandson of Cassius Deck to fill in while Winning Deck was in Queensland for a season).  This colt is out of an Ole Sugar Daddy mare who is out of the great producer Cat Dancin Woman.  This fellow is fast and very nimble footed - a bit lighter in construction than the others.

Bay colt by Bullrush and out of Tappie Rae, a daughter of Great Stuff (Jet Master x Femme Fatale).   Tappie is out of a Jet Master mare.  This colt is of smaller stature but strong and quick.   We look at him and think "time event" or "mounted games"

We also have 5 yearling fillies and a couple of other folk for sale but have run out of time to list them right at the moment as well as Texas Longhorn cows in calf.

Can anyone help with information on locating either of the following Stallions. They are full brothers so locating either one would be good.
The horses are  "Another Deck"  Q46801  by 'Deck the Halls" out of "Dancing Moon" the other one is  "Bar I" Q35710. I have information that "Another Deck" was owned by Scott A Wilmot , P O Box 2533 Nambour West 4560 but I have not been able to locate this person at this time. The Q.H. stud book has "Bar I" as still being owned by his breeder Mr Kevin Fox ,but as that gentleman passed away several years ago the horse could be anywhere .Any information would be greatly appreciated you can contact me by phone at (07) 49342840 or email at  loiskil@westnet.com.au
